Arrival & First Game Drive
Your driver-guide collects you from your Kampala or Entebbe hotel early in the morning for the drive south-west to Queen Elizabeth National Park — Uganda's most celebrated wildlife sanctuary. The journey of approximately 5–6 hours crosses the Equator at Kayabwe, where you'll stop for a memorable photograph and a fascinating demonstration of the Coriolis effect.
Continue through Mbarara and into the Rift Valley, where the landscape opens into vast savannah studded with euphorbia trees and distant volcanic peaks. Arrive in Queen Elizabeth in time for a late afternoon game drive across the Kasenyi Plains — prime hunting ground for lions, and home to enormous buffalo herds, Uganda kob, warthog, topi, and elephants that roam freely to the horizon. Check in to your lodge as the sky turns amber and the sounds of the African night begin.
Kazinga Channel Cruise & Tree-Climbing Lions
Wake before dawn for a morning game drive through the Kasenyi sector — the golden light of sunrise turning the savannah into something otherworldly. Lions are most active at this hour, and your guide's expertise in reading tracks and scanning the treelines significantly increases your chances of a sighting.
Return to the lodge for breakfast, then embark on the iconic Kazinga Channel boat cruise — a 2-hour journey along the waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. The channel banks host one of the continent's greatest concentrations of hippos, alongside thousands of Nile crocodiles, enormous buffalo herds arriving to drink, and a dazzling array of water birds. In the afternoon, drive to the remote Ishasha sector, famed for its lions that rest in the spreading branches of ancient fig trees — a behaviour unique to very few places on Earth.
The Drive North & Nile Boat Cruise
After a final morning drive in the Ishasha sector, head north on one of Uganda's most scenic routes — past the crater lake district, where a series of perfectly circular volcanic lakes shimmer in vivid greens and blues. A brief panoramic stop above the craters is one of the quiet highlights of the journey. Arrive at Murchison Falls National Park — Uganda's largest protected area — in the afternoon.
Without delay, join the famous Nile River boat cruise upstream towards the base of Murchison Falls. The journey takes approximately 3 hours along the Victoria Nile, whose banks teem with crocodiles, Nile monitors, hippo pods, and an extraordinary parade of water birds. As you near the falls, the roar grows louder until the entire volume of the Nile — the world's longest river — explodes through a 7-metre rock chasm in a column of white water and mist. Game Drive & Transfer South to Gorilla Country
Rise early for a morning game drive through Murchison's northern circuit — elephants, giraffes, hartebeest, and lions are regularly sighted in the fresh morning light. Keep an eye on the riverbanks for the prehistoric shoebill stork, one of Africa's most sought-after birds. After breakfast, begin the long but richly scenic drive south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The journey passes through Fort Portal — a charming highland town framed by the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains — before descending into the lush, dramatically steep terrain of south-western Uganda. Arrive at your Bwindi forest lodge by late afternoon. As dusk falls over the ancient canopy, your guide holds a comprehensive briefing on the gorilla trekking experience ahead: permits, safety guidelines, what to expect from the forest, and how to conduct yourself in the presence of a mountain gorilla family. Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Return
The moment your entire safari has been building towards. After an early breakfast, collect your gorilla trekking permit and set out with armed rangers and expert trackers into the Impenetrable Forest. The trek through dense vegetation, steep slopes, and tangled undergrowth can last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on where the gorilla family has chosen to rest that morning.
When your trackers finally give the signal — when the forest opens and you find yourself metres from a 200-kilogram silverback, his family grazing and playing around him — the world contracts to this single extraordinary moment. You are granted one precious hour with the gorilla family. Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remain on Earth. This is not simply a safari activity. It is one of the most profound wildlife encounters our planet can offer.
