TOUR DETAILS

Day 1: Kampala / Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Drive Duration: Approximately 8–9 hours (with stops) Meals: Lunch en route, Dinner at lodge Overnight: Forest Lodge, Bwindi

Your adventure begins early in the morning when your driver/guide collects you from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. After brief introductions and a safety briefing, you set off southwest on one of Uganda’s most scenic road journeys — a route that winds through the Equator, tea estates, banana plantations, and the breathtaking highlands of Kabale.

Crossing the Equator at Kayabwe, you are invited to pause for photographs and a fascinating demonstration of the Coriolis effect — where water drains in opposite directions on each side of the imaginary line that divides the world. This popular stop is a wonderful way to mark the beginning of a truly extraordinary journey.

As you continue deeper into southwestern Uganda, the landscape transforms into rolling green hills draped in mist — so lush and dramatic that the region is often called the “Switzerland of Africa.” The road descends through the town of Kabale, perched at over 1,900 metres above sea level, where you stop for a well-deserved lunch at a local restaurant overlooking Lake Bunyonyi, one of Africa’s deepest and most picturesque lakes.

After lunch, you press on for the final leg of the drive through winding mountain roads into Bwindi, arriving at your forest lodge by late afternoon. Set against the ancient canopy of one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests, your lodge feels like a world apart from everyday life. Check in, freshen up, and enjoy a cup of Ugandan tea or coffee on the veranda as the sounds of the forest come alive around you.

In the evening, your guide conducts a pre-trek briefing to prepare you for the gorilla trekking experience the following morning. You’ll learn about gorilla behavior, safety guidelines, what to expect on the trail, and how the habituation process works. Dinner is served at the lodge, featuring a warm selection of Ugandan and continental dishes. Tonight, rest well — tomorrow is the moment you have been waiting for.

Activities Today:

  • Departure from Kampala/Entebbe
  • Equator crossing at Kayabwe
  • Scenic drive through Kabale highlands
  • Views of Lake Bunyonyi (optional short stop)
  • Arrival and check-in at Bwindi forest lodge
  • Pre-trek briefing by your guide

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Meals: Breakfast at lodge, Packed lunch in the forest Overnight: Forest Lodge, Bwindi

Today is the highlight of your entire safari — the day you come face-to-face with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Rise early for a hearty breakfast at the lodge before transferring to the Uganda Wildlife Authority headquarters in Bwindi. Here, you and fellow trekkers gather for a final briefing from UWA park rangers, who divide participants into small groups of no more than eight people per gorilla family. Each group is assigned to trek to a different habituated gorilla family, ensuring minimal disturbance to the animals and a more intimate experience for visitors.

Armed with walking sticks, a packed lunch, and a spirit of adventure, you set off into the ancient green world of Bwindi. The forest is extraordinarily dense and atmospheric — layers upon layers of towering trees, tangled vines, giant ferns, and lush undergrowth, all carpeted in soft mosses. It is a place that feels truly prehistoric, and with good reason: Bwindi has existed as a continuous forest for over 25,000 years, surviving the last Ice Age while much of Africa’s rainforest was wiped out.

The duration of your trek varies depending on where the gorilla family has chosen to rest that day. Some groups encounter gorillas within an hour of hiking; others may trek for three to five hours through steep, slippery terrain. Regardless of the effort required, every step through this mystical forest is a reward in itself — you may spot colorful forest birds, chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, and rare orchids along the way.

When the lead ranger finally spots the gorillas, your heart will quicken. You will be guided to within seven metres of the group — close enough to see the silverback’s chest rise and fall, watch juveniles tumble playfully over each other, and meet the steady, intelligent gaze of a mountain gorilla. You are granted one full hour in the presence of the gorilla family, which passes far too quickly. It is a profoundly moving encounter — an experience that almost every traveler describes as one of the most powerful moments of their lives.

After returning from the trek, the afternoon is yours to relax or explore. If you have the energy and the interest, an optional visit to a Batwa Pygmy community is available. The Batwa are the indigenous people of Bwindi — the original “keepers of the forest” who lived within these jungles for thousands of years. Their cultural performance, storytelling, and demonstration of traditional forest skills offers a deeply human complement to the wildlife experience of the morning.

Dinner and overnight at the forest lodge.

Activities Today:

  • Early breakfast and transfer to UWA headquarters
  • Final briefing and group assignment by park rangers
  • Mountain gorilla trekking with expert rangers and guides
  • One full hour with a habituated gorilla family
  • Packed lunch in the forest
  • Optional: Batwa cultural community visit (extra cost)
  • Return to lodge, dinner, and overnight

Day 3: Bwindi to Kampala / Entebbe — Return Journey

Meals: Breakfast at lodge Drive Duration: Approximately 8–10 hours (with stops)

Your final morning in Bwindi arrives peacefully. Wake up to the sounds of the forest — birdsong, rustling leaves, and the distant call of primates — and savor a leisurely breakfast at the lodge. Take a last walk along the forest edge or simply sit on the veranda and breathe in the pure highland air, allowing the memories of yesterday’s gorilla encounter to settle into your heart.

After breakfast and checkout, your driver/guide loads your luggage and begins the return journey northward toward Kampala and Entebbe. The drive back offers a fresh perspective on the landscapes you traveled through two days ago — the mist-wrapped hills of Kabale may look entirely different in the morning light, and there is always something new to notice on Uganda’s endlessly varied roads.

Along the route, you stop at Lake Bunyonyi for lunch and a longer exploration if time allows. Translated as “the place of many little birds,” Lake Bunyonyi is one of the most serene and beautiful lakes in Uganda, ringed by terraced hillsides and dotted with small islands. It is an ideal spot to relax over a meal, watch local canoe fishermen glide across the still water, and reflect on an extraordinary few days in the Pearl of Africa.

Continuing north, you arrive back at the Equator for any last photographs, before the final stretch back to Kampala or Entebbe. Arrival is expected in the early evening, where your driver/guide drops you off at your hotel or Entebbe International Airport for onward travel.

Your 3-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari concludes — but the encounter with those ancient eyes in the forest will stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

Activities Today:

  • Leisurely breakfast and checkout from the lodge
  • Scenic return drive through Kabale highlands
  • Lunch stop at Lake Bunyonyi
  • Equator crossing stop at Kayabwe
  • Arrival back in Kampala or Entebbe by evening
