Uganda Wildlife Authority Gorilla Permits. If there is one wildlife experience on the African continent that genuinely stops people in their tracks and leaves them breathless, it is coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla in the wild. Uganda is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, and trekking to see them in their natural forest habitat is widely regarded as one of the greatest wildlife encounters on Earth. But before you can step into the jungle, there is one critical document you need to secure — the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Gorilla Permit. This guide covers everything from pricing and availability to where to book, what to expect, and how to plan your perfect gorilla trekking trip in Uganda.

What Is a Uganda Wildlife Authority Gorilla Permit?

A Uganda Wildlife Authority Gorilla Permit is an official document issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority that grants you legal access to trek and spend one hour with a habituated gorilla family inside a designated national park. The permit is the foundation of Uganda’s gorilla conservation program. Revenue collected from the sale of gorilla permits goes directly toward protecting gorilla habitats, funding ranger salaries, and supporting the local communities that live around the national parks.

Without a valid permit, no one — tourist or resident — is allowed to enter the gorilla trekking zones. The UWA strictly enforces this, and all permits are tracked and registered to the individual traveller who purchases them. This system ensures that gorilla families are not disturbed beyond the permitted daily quota, keeping both the animals and the ecosystems they live in safe and sustainable for generations to come.

How Much Does a Uganda Gorilla Permit Cost?

As of 2024–2025, the Uganda Wildlife Authority Gorilla Permit is priced at USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents and USD 700 per person for foreign residents of East Africa. Citizens of East African Community member states pay a significantly reduced rate in Uganda Shillings.

While USD 800 may seem steep at first glance, it is important to understand what you are paying for. This is not just an entry ticket — it is a conservation contribution, a ranger escort for the entire trek, a habitat protection fee, and a lifetime memory all rolled into one. Uganda’s gorilla permit remains one of the most competitively priced in the region compared to Rwanda, where a single gorilla permit costs USD 1,500. If budget is a consideration, Uganda offers exceptional value for an experience that is virtually identical in quality and intimacy.

You can book your permit directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, or through a licensed tour operator. Working with a trusted travel partner — such as Pick and Transfer Safaris — ensures you navigate the permit booking process smoothly without any risk of errors, double bookings, or missing availability.

Where Can You Use a UWA Gorilla Permit?

Uganda has two national parks where gorilla trekking with a UWA permit takes place:

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Uganda’s most famous gorilla trekking destination. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi is home to over 500 mountain gorillas spread across multiple habituated families. The park has four main trekking sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo — each offering a different experience and a different level of terrain difficulty. Bwindi’s ancient, mist-drenched forest is unlike anything else in Africa, and the gorilla encounter here is nothing short of magical.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smaller and less visited gorilla trekking destination, located in the Virunga volcanic mountain range that straddles the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mgahinga is also home to golden monkeys and offers spectacular volcanic scenery. However, gorilla permit availability at Mgahinga is more limited since there is currently only one habituated gorilla family in the park.

How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available Per Day?

The Uganda Wildlife Authority limits the number of gorilla trekking permits available each day across all habituated gorilla families. Each habituated gorilla family can receive a maximum of eight visitors per day, and trekking groups are limited to one hour of actual contact time with the gorillas once they are located.

Bwindi has multiple habituated families across its four trekking sectors, which increases overall daily permit availability. However, demand for gorilla permits — particularly during Uganda’s peak travel seasons of June to September and December to February — is very high. Permits regularly sell out months in advance during these periods. Booking early, ideally six to twelve months ahead of your intended trek date, is strongly recommended.

For travellers who want to trek gorillas in both Uganda and Rwanda on the same itinerary, Kenlink Tours’ 7-Day Gorilla and Wildlife Safari is a highly regarded option that combines primate encounters with broader East African wildlife experiences.

What Is the Gorilla Habituation Experience Permit?

For travellers who want an even more exclusive and immersive encounter than the standard one-hour gorilla trek, the Uganda Wildlife Authority also offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX) permit, currently priced at USD 1,500 per person.

This permit allows you to spend up to four hours with a gorilla family that is still in the process of becoming accustomed to human presence. Only four visitors are permitted per day on the habituation experience, making it extremely exclusive. The extended time with the gorillas offers photographers, researchers, and wildlife enthusiasts an unparalleled window into the social lives and behaviour of these remarkable primates. The Gorilla Habituation Experience is only available in Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

How to Book a Uganda Gorilla Permit

There are two main routes to securing your Uganda gorilla permit:

Through the Uganda Wildlife Authority directly: You can apply and pay for permits directly via the UWA’s official website. This is a viable option for independent travellers, though it requires careful attention to payment processing, documentation, and ensuring you have all required details correct.

Through a licensed tour operator: Most visitors book their gorilla permits through a licensed Ugandan tour operator as part of a broader safari package. This is by far the most convenient approach, as the operator handles permit procurement, park logistics, accommodation, and transport on your behalf.

For seamless, stress-free travel between Kigali and Bwindi or Kampala and Bwindi, Pick and Transfer offers dedicated safari transfers and fully organized gorilla trekking packages. Our vehicles are comfortable, our drivers are experienced on Uganda’s roads, and we ensure you arrive at the park well-rested and ready for your trek.

For those interested in combining the gorilla trek with a broader primate and wildlife adventure, Kenlink Tours’ 7-Day Wildlife, Gorillas and Chimpanzees Safari is a beautifully curated itinerary that pairs Bwindi gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest and game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

What to Expect on a Gorilla Trek in Uganda

On the day of your trek, you will be required to report to the park headquarters by 7:30 AM for a briefing. Rangers will assign you to a gorilla family based on your physical fitness and the group composition. The actual trek through the forest can range from 30 minutes to six or more hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight.

Once you locate the gorillas, you will have exactly one hour with them. You are required to maintain a minimum distance of seven metres from the gorillas at all times — though the gorillas themselves often ignore this rule and wander surprisingly close to trekkers. Photography is permitted, but flash is strictly prohibited.

What no photograph can fully capture, however, is the feeling of locking eyes with a silverback gorilla in the wild. It is a deeply moving, quietly humbling experience that stays with you long after you have left the forest.

Tips for a Successful Gorilla Trekking Experience

To make the most of your Uganda gorilla trek, keep the following in mind. Book your permits as early as possible — ideally through a trusted operator — to avoid disappointment. Wear neutral-coloured, long-sleeved clothing and sturdy, waterproof hiking boots. Bring a good quality raincoat, as forest weather changes rapidly. Hiring a porter is highly recommended both to support local livelihoods and to make the trek physically more manageable. And finally, ensure you have arranged reliable transport to and from the park — a task that Pick and Transfer handles efficiently for travellers coming from Kampala, Entebbe, or Kigali.
